Vol. 318 No. 3

Written Answers. - Protection of Animals for Slaughter Convention.

408.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if Ireland is a signatory of, or proposes to sign, the European Convention for the Protection of Animals for Slaughter, if so, when the ratifying legislation will be introduced and if he will outline the arrangements necessary to ensure enforcement of this convention.

Ireland has not yet signed the European Convention for the Protection of Animals for Slaughter but proposes to do so shortly. No additional national legislation will be required.

Compliance with the requirements of the convention will be enforced at slaughterhouses engaged in the production of meat for export by officers of the Department of Agriculture and at other slaughterhouses by the local authorities for the areas in which they are located.
