It is generally accepted that the over-enrichment of Lough Sheelin and its feeder streams is attributable to runoff from animal slurry spreading on land. The problem is therefore, largely an agricultural one and I understand that the Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the county agricultural advisory service, the Department of Fisheries and Forestry and other interested bodies, are actively engaged in trying to assist the pig producers in making arrangements for the disposal of a substantially increased amount of the slurry outside the Sheelin catchment area. A committee representative of these bodies has been set up with a view to finding a solution to the problem as soon as possible.
