Vol. 318 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Road Improvements.

366.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his proposals for substantial improvements on the N5 route between Swinford and Castlebar, County Mayo.

The formulation of proposals for the improvement of this road is a matter in the first instance for Mayo County Council. I notified the council on 12 October 1978 of my approval to their proposals for the improvement of a section of the route between Ballyvary and Bohola at Knockatemple. This scheme has been virtually completed with the aid of full cost road grants totalling £150,000.

The council's proposals for a major improvement scheme on the remaining sections of the route between Ballyvary and Bohola, including the by-passing of both villages, are under technical examination in my Department.

I understand that the council's engineering staff, following discussions with my Department's engineering advisers, are preparing designs for improvement schemes for the road sections from Swinford to Bohola and from Ballyvary to Castlebar.
