Vol. 318 No. 9

Written Answers. - Tax Yields.

301.

asked the Minister for Finance, the final figure for the estimated receipts of Exchequer yield from PAYE income tax for the calendar year 1979 and the estimated yield for 1980 in view of the recent Budget changes.

The estimated Exchequer receipt of income tax collected under PAYE in 1979 was £646.5 million. The estimated yield for 1980, if there had been no budget changes, would have been £922 million. The post-budget estimate for 1980 is £794 million which includes a sum of £10 million not collected in 1979 due to the postal dispute.

It should be noted that these figures cover more than income tax on ordinary wages and salaries. In particular they include income tax paid by directors of close companies.

302.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of road tax paid for 1977 and the estimated figures for 1980 of (i) road tax and (ii) the additional 20 pence per gallon on petrol.

The amount of road tax paid in 1977 was £25.25 million (out of total motor vehicle duties of £32.67 million).

It is estimated that in 1980: (i) road tax will yield £12.0 million (out of total motor vehicle duties of £23.5 million); (ii) the additional 20p duty per gallon of petrol will yield £49.0 million.
