Vol. 319 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mayo Illegal Fishing.

224.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the illegal fishing on the rivers Moy and Easkey in County Mayo and the action he proposes to remedy the matter.

Under the Fisheries Acts 1959 to 1978, the Ballina Board of Conservators is responsible for the protection of the fisheries in the Ballina fishery district which includes the rivers Moy and Easkey. I am satisfied that the board are doing everything possible to combat illegal fishing in the district. I would add, however, that the setting up of the new regional fisheries boards, with their full-time chief officers and the introduction of greatly increased penalties for illegal fishing, will enable the protection of our valuable inland fisheries to be further improved and intensified.
