Vol. 319 No. 1

Written Answers. - Aquaculture Education Programme.

226.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will outline his education programme for aquaculture and the grants, including training grants from EEC, that are available.

As part of its advisory services, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara may subvent the cost of training courses for fishermen up to a maximum of 50 per cent of receipted costs. This scheme has recently been extended to include training for existing fish farmers, and the board organises training courses for fish farmers in local areas in response to demand. There is also a diploma course in aquaculture organised by the Galway Regional Technical College.

There are no specific funds available from the EEC for aquaculture training but it is possible that such training could be funded from the European Social Fund. The amount of such funding would depend on the merits of the particular proposal.
