Vol. 320 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Cars Stolen.

216.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of cars stolen in Dublin in (a) the last six months, (b) the last year, and (c) the last two years.

217.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the problem of stolen cars which has now become acute in the Dublin area.

218.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has under consideration any new measures to combat the growing menace of stolen cars driven by unqualified drivers with consequent danger to the general public in the Dublin area.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 216, 217 and 218 together.

It is assumed that the questions are intended to include cars taken without the owner's consent, even though in most cases this is not stealing in the legal sense. Statistics of cases of unauthorised taking of vehicles are as follows:

1/10/79 to

9,438

8,861

31/3/80

In order to combat this problem gardaí in district patrol cars are assisted by Crime Task Force personnel who patrol areas of greatest need. The garda have been in touch with car manufacturers with a view to improving locking devices.
