Vol. 321 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Vacant Site.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his plans for the vacant site in Mulgrave Street, Limerick, which was formerly the Clover Meats factory.

When the lands adjoining Limerick Prison came on the market, they were acquired to make it possible, in the long-term, to modernise Limerick Prison. The industrial buildings which formerly occupied the site have been cleared and the lands have been fenced. Specific long-term intentions for the development of the site have not been decided. In the short-term, however, the site can be used to provide better work-training facilities for selected prisoners and, in this connection, consideration is being given to introducing training courses in building construction.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.

Due to the shortness of the debate on the Estimate for the Department of the Environment, I found it impossible to contribute. Last week I gave notice that I proposed, with the permission of the Chair, to raise on the adjournment the question of the paying-off of 19 people from Donegal County Council as a result of financila cut-backs by the Minister.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.

I suggest for questions such as Nos. 20 and 21, that the Minister for Justice should be here to answer such questions in future, fully briefed.

May I express my thanks and appreciation to the Chair for the most courtiest letter received, with special reference to the curtailment of the debate on Friday last on the estimates for the Department of the Environment and the treatment meted out to the Deputies who wish to take part and very wisely suggesting that this matter be referred to the Committee in Procedure and Privileges where there can be reasoned and understandable debate.

Deputies

Hear, Hear,

With the permission of the Chair, I wish to raise on the adjournment the question of the bank robbery in Tipperary town on last Friday morning, when a group of armed men took over the town with a bus and the Government's obvious failure to give protection to the people of Tipperary town and to the banks.

I wish, with the permission of the Chair, to raise on the adjournment the subject matter of Question No. 207 which appeared on the Order Paper——

Question No. 207 of today?

Of 6 May last.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
