Vol. 321 No. 5

Private Notice Questions. - Dublin Meat Plant Closure.

andDr. FitzGerald asked the Minister for Labour if, in view of yesterday's decision to close the International Meat Packers Plant at Ringsend, Dublin, and the consequent direct loss of 403 jobs, he will make a statement on the urgent steps he is taking to see if an agreement is possible that would lead to a reversal of the decision.

I am very concerned by the decision by the committee of management of International Meat Packers to close their Grand Canal Street factory in Dublin involving as it does the loss of over 400 jobs. I have been in touch with the Labour Court in the matter and I understand that an industrial relations officer of the court's conciliation service is in contact with the parties to the dispute. I also understand that a meeting between the company and the union involved has been arranged for tomorrow. I will, of course, be keeping in close touch with developments.

Will the Minister agree that it is universally wished that this matter be satisfactorily resolved and that the jobs will be saved?

I am hopeful that the result of these direct talks will be fruitful and I will be keeping in close touch with developments.
