Vol. 324 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kilkenny Bridge.

38.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the expected cost of a new bridge crossing the river Suir at Fiddown, County Kilkenny he will outline the proposed method of financing this new bridge; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The cost of constructing a suitable replacement bridge at Fiddown was estimated at £800,000 at 1979 prices. CIE have agreed to contribute 25 per cent of the total cost subject to a maximum of £250,000. As the bridge will not form part of a national route, a full cost grant is not applicable, but Waterford and Kilkenny County Councils were notified of the availability of a special grant of 75 per cent of the net cost to them. The councils have agreed to meet the balance of the cost in the proportion of 40 per cent by Waterford County Council and 60 per cent by Kilkenny County Council.
