Vol. 324 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bus Roadworthiness Regulations.

44.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is satisfied with the current roadworthiness regulations as applied to CIE buses; and if the danger of such vehicles overturning requires that roofs be strengthened.

The current roadworthiness regulations as applied to CIE and other buses are contained in the Road Traffic (Construction Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 made under the Road Traffic Act, 1961. I am advised that these regulations complied with will ensure the stability of buses on the road and prevent the danger of overturning. I have no immediate proposals to amend these regulations in relation to the strengthening of the roofs of buses.

(Cavan-Monaghan): If the Minister has the information, would he tell me if there is any truth in the statement I read lately that CIE have not taken delivery of a new bus in the last four years? If so, does that not amount to a great run-down of the fleet?

That is a matter for the Minister for Transport. Roadworthiness is what I am worried about.

(Cavan-Monaghan): If the Minister is worried about that, he will note what I say.
