Vol. 325 No. 1

Written Answers. - Death Certificate Issue.

346.

asked the Minister for Health the reason a death certificate has not been issued since April 1980 in respect of an application lodged in respect of a deceased person (details supplied).

As the death in question was not registered within a year of its occurrence, it was necessary to get the written authority of An tArd-Chláraitheoir to enable this to be done. Application for this authority was made by the Registrar on 14 May 1980. It was then necessary to obtain a statutory declaration of death by a qualified informant and this was submitted to the General Register Office on 25 June 1980. In accordance with normal procedure, a thorough search was then undertaken of the records of the General Register Office to check the possibility of the death having been already registered. The completion of this search was delayed by a serious back-log of work in the General Register Office due to an unusually heavy demand for birth, death and marriage certificates in the first half of 1980.

Authority to register the death issued to the Registrar on 21 November 1980. I understand that the death has now been registered. Death certificates may be obtained from the Registrar.
