Vol. 325 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiddy Island Oil Terminal.

14.

asked the Minister for Energy the up-to-date situation on the future of the Whiddy Island Oil Terminal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that Gulf Oil Company are exploring possible arrangements under which the terminal might be reactivated and, of course, in this connection the question of restoring the destroyed jetty or the building of another jetty would arise. I can assure the Deputy that the possibility of the reactivation of the terminal is being kept under constant review by my Department.

I did not hear the first sentence of the reply. What is the position about Gulf Oil?

I understand that they are exploring possible arrangements under which the terminal might be reactivated.

Does the Minister believe that Gulf Oil are now committed to restoring the terminal and the jetties in the light of the efforts they made to sell?

I cannot speak for the company. I can only tell the Deputy that I understand that they are exploring possible arrangements for reactivating the terminal. I am aware of some of the efforts they have made.

In the context of the efforts that Gulf have made to sell the terminal and so on, have the Government any plans in the likely eventuality that Gulf will not proceed to restore the jetty and terminal to action?

We are looking at the situation that is arising. However, the Deputy will appreciate that the matter is complicated by two factors, the first being that the property is leased to the company and the second that there are legal proceedings pending in respect of a number of matters.

Will the Minister note that the area is very badly affected by the present situation?
