Vol. 325 No. 6

Written Answers. - Registration of Doctors.

202.

asked the Minister for Health the reason it is necessary for doctors from abroad to spend one year in a British hospital before being granted full registration in this country; and if he will have this imposition removed.

There is no requirement for foreign doctors seeking full registration in this country to spend one year in a British hospital so the question of removing such an imposition does not arise.

In order to become fully registered every doctor, including Irish doctors, in addition to his primary medical qualification, must have a certificate of hospital experience, generally the equivalent of what is known as the "intern" year. The granting of such certificate is a matter for the medical body which awards the primary medical qualification.
