Vol. 325 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Garda Assignments.

325.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí assigned to Dublin County Borough in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979; and the number of these that were assigned to traffic duty.

326.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí on traffic duty in Dublin in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979; and the number of gardai on point duty prior to the introduction of traffic lights in O'Connell Street, Dublin.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 325 and 326 together.

The numbers of members of the Garda Síochána of all ranks assigned to stations located in the Dublin County Borough on 31 December in each of the years 1976 to 1979 were as follows:—

Year

No. of Members

1976

1,663

1977

1,706

1978

1,786

1979

1,783

It will be appreciated that the area served by the stations in the Dublin County Borough is not coterminous with the borough itself.

As regards the number of gardaí assigned to traffic duty in Dublin, the position is that there is a special Traffic Department based at Dublin Castle which has primary responsibility for traffic control in the Dublin Metropolitan Area but, in addition, uniformed members of the force at all stations perform traffic duties as and when required. Accordingly, it would be misleading to give figures in relation to the number of gardaí assigned exclusively to traffic duties in the area as these take no account of the input by other uniformed members of the force.

Prior to the introduction of traffic signals in O'Connell Street, Dublin, in February 1977, 16 gardaí were required each day for point duty at the traffic intersections in the street.
