Vol. 326 No. 2

Written Answers. - Redundancy Payments.

204.

asked the Minister for Labour the reason for the delay in making redundancy payments to a person (details supplied) in Waterford.

The person in question was made redundant in 1978 and received a lump sum and certain weekly payments under the Redundancy Payments Acts. He is now inquiring about entitlement to redundancy weekly payments in respect of periods of unemployment in 1979 and 1980.

Section 8 of the Redundancy Payments Act, 1979, which came into effect on 6 April 1979, abolished redundancy weekly payments except for persons receiving them on that date. The case in question is not in the excepted category.

Representations in relation to the effect of abolition of eligibility for redundancy weekly payments on a number of persons redundant have been made to my Department who are examining these representations at present. It appears that amending legislation would be necessary to deal with the issues involved and it is not clear that such legislation would be justified. The case in question is being covered in the departmental review referred to.
