Written Answers. - Grant-Aided Factories.

216.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism (a) the number of grant-aided factories that have closed each year for the past three years; (b) the total amount of grants paid to such factories; and (c) the total amount recovered.

The number of firms grant-aided by the IDA which closed during the three most recent years for which details are available is as follows: 1977, 67; 1978, 54; 1979, 60.

The total amount of grants paid to these companies was £20,164,650. This includes grants paid to the companies concerned by An Foras Tionscal during the period 1952 to 1969 and by the IDA under all their grant programmes.

The total amount recovered to date is £3,643,132.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism the number of grant-aided factories commenced in County Westmeath in each year since 1970.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism the number of grant-aided factories commenced in County Longford in each year since 1970.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 217 and 218 together.

The records maintained by the Industrial Development Authority relating to grant-aided projects are based on the dates on which grants have been approved and paid. These records do not include information on the dates of the commencement of projects.

Details of projects approved for Counties Longford and Westmeath in the period 1 April 1970 to 31 December 1980 are as follows:
