asked the Minister for the Public Service if the special amounts of £40 million, £75 million and £100 million set aside in the 1978, 1979 and 1980 budgets respectively to cover all further public service and pension pay increases in each of those years, were exceeded in any of those years; if so, by how much; and how the excess was paid for in each case.

The following are particulars of (a) the special budget allocations for increases in public service pay and pensions, (b) the estimated cost of such increases, (c) the amount by which the cost exceeded the provisions, and (d) the manner in which the cost of the increases was financed in respect of the years 1978, 1979 and 1980.
