Vol. 326 No. 4

Written Answers. - Department of the Taoiseach Staff.

197.

asked the Taoiseach the number of staff in his office and secretariat in 1979 and 1980 and the number planned for 1981.

The number of staff in my office and the secretariat of my Department on 31 December 1979 was 32: on 31 December 1980 the number was 151 and in 1981 I expect the number to be approximately 164. As indicated in previous replies, the increase in staff in 1980 was largely due to:

(i) the transfer of staff from the former Department of Economic Planning and Development; and

(ii) the assumption by my Department of responsibility for national science policy and for the messenger and cleaning service in the North Block of Government Buildings.

The increase in 1981 will arise from the filling of posts which are currently vacant and the possible creation of a small number of new posts at administrative and clerical level.

These figures do not include staff in the Office of the Minister of State at my Department, the staff of the Government Information Services and clerical staff on loan to the National Economic and Social Council.
