Vol. 326 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drift Net Fishing.

241.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is prepared to increase the length of the fishing season for drift net fishermen off the north Mayo coast.

I am at present reviewing the overall national controls on salmon fishing for the 1981 season and will announce my decision in the very near future.

242.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the basis for allowing only 800 yards of net for drift net fishermen off the north Mayo coast; and if he will make an order allowing an increase to 1,500 yards.

The Drift Nets for Salmon or Trout Fishing (Maximum Length) Bye-law, No. 572, 1975, prescribes the maximum length of drift net, or two or more drift nets joined together, which may be used in fishing for salmon or trout in the sea and tidal waters where drift netting is permitted throughout the country. In general the prescribed maximum length of drift net is related to fishing conditions and fishing tradition in each area. In view of the continuing decline in our salmon stocks I am not prepared at present to increase from 800 yards the maximum length of drift net or two or more drift nets joined together permissible off the north Mayo coast.
