Vol. 326 No. 4

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

243.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the engineering work necessary to enable telephones to be connected in the area of Augheraskea, Drumree, County Meath; the number of telephones which will be served by the engineering work which remains to be carried out; and when this will be carried out.

It is necessary to provide about five kms of cable in order to give service to five waiting applicants in this area. Because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention at present it is unlikely that the necessary work will be completed for at least another year.

244.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applications for telephone service awaiting attention in the Delvin area of County Westmeath; the extent of the shortage of equipment at the local exchange which is preventing these applications being met; and when this shortage will be remedied.

There are 35 waiting applicants in the Delvin, County Westmeath area. These will be cleared progressively over the next two years or so according as it is possible to attend to the cabling, etc. work involved.

The equipment at Delvin exchange is adequate to meet existing needs but a new exchange to cater for future development is expected to be brought into service about the end of this year.
