Vol. 326 No. 5

Written Answers. - Currency Valuation.

184.

asked the Taoiseach the value of the £ on 1 January 1925, 1928, 1930, 1935, 1938, 1940, 1945, 1948, 1950, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1965, 1968, 1970, with 1925 as the base year.

The value of the pound is estimated on the basis of the consumer price index which was calculated in respect of mid-January, mid-April, mid-July and mid-October during 1923 1930 and in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November from 1931 to-date. The amounts which would have been required at mid-January in the years 1928 and 1930 and at mid-February in the later years mentioned by the Deputy to purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as £1 would have purchased at mid-January 1925 are given in the following table.
