asked the Minister for Justice the total number of charges brought in the past year against motorists driving with excess alcohol; and the number for each Garda Division in the country.
Written Answers. - Drunk-Driving Prosecutions.
There are different categories of drinking-and-driving offences. The total number of prosecutions brought in 1980 in respect of the categories of offences most closely corresponding to what the Deputy appears to have in mind was 8,340. The numbers of such prosecutions instituted in each Garda Division are set out in the form of a tabular statement, which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.
Following is the statement:
The following are the numbers of prosecutions instituted in each Garda Division in 1980 in respect of the offences of:
(i) driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle (m.p.v.) while drunk.
(ii) being in charge of an m.p.v. while drunk.
(iii) driving or attempting to drive an m.p.v. while the concentration of alcohol in the blood or urine was above the prescribed limit.
(iv) being in charge of an m.p.v. while the concentration of alcohol in the blood or urine was above the prescribed limit.
