Vol. 326 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mayo Island Bottled Gas Scheme.

161.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that pensioners on Clare Island, County Mayo are denied the usage of vouchers for the free gas scheme due to the unavailability of suitable dealers at present; and if he will either recoup the amount of vouchers in cash to those concerned, or make immediate alternative arrangements to have the matter rectified.

I have recently been made aware that the authorised bottled gas dealer on the island is no longer trading. In response to a letter received in my Department the islanders in receipt of free bottled gas refills allowance were requested to return their voucher books to my Department together with the name of the dealer from whom they now wish to obtain supplies. To date none of the books have been received for amendment. When they are received they will be amended and re-issued immediately to the persons concerned.

The appointment of a dealer in any location is a matter for the company supplying bottled gas and is a matter over which I have no control.
