Vol. 326 No. 11

Written Answers. - South-West Cork Factory Closures.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if he will give details of factory closures and job losses in south-west Cork since 1977.

Firms are not obliged to notify me of their intention to close or to lay off workers.

For the purpose of this question I have defined south-west Cork as the area comprehending the towns of Bandon, Bantry, Castletownbere, Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Kinsale, Schull and Skibbereen. According to the information available to me four manufacturing firms closed in this area during the past three years with a loss of 55 jobs.

Based on the results of the Industrial Development Authority's annual employment surveys the number employed in manufacturing industry in the south-west Cork area at 1 January 1981 was 250 higher than at 1 January 1978.
