Vol. 326 No. 11

Written Answers. - Cork Redundancy Benefit Payment.

391.

asked the Minister for Labour the reason for the delay in the payment of redundancy benefit to a person (details supplied) in Cork city; and when payment can be expected.

The person in question was made redundant in 1977 and received a redundancy lump sum and certain weekly payments.

Section 8 of the Redundancy Payments Act, 1979, which came into effect on 6 April 1979 abolished redundancy weekly payments except for persons receiving them on that date. If after that date payments to those still receiving them ceased for any reason, such as resumption of employment, any undrawn balance could not be subsequently claimed.

The person in question was receiving redundancy weekly payments on 6 April 1979. His entitlement ceased on 30 April 1979 when he became employed in his present job. I understand that he has since been continuously employed so that there would be no question of weekly payments even if entitlement had continued.

I am aware from representations already made to me that some persons affected by the abolition of weekly payments want to have the discontinuance of their entitlements reviewed. Any changes in redundancy entitlements would require amending legislation and valid reasons for this would have to be put forward.
