Vol. 327 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime at Sea Detection.

253.

asked the Minister for Justice the facilities the Garda have to detect crime at sea, such as arms smuggling; if any vessels are available or planned for the task; if he is satisfied that the Garda can prevent crimes in coastal areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While there are no vessels available for the exclusive use of the Garda Síochána there is a standing arrangement whereby the Naval Service comes to the assistance of the Garda, as required, in the prevention and detection of crime in coastal areas. The Garda authorities consider that the facilities available to them in this respect are adequate and there is no proposal at present to change the existing arrangements.
