Vol. 327 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

226.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that in a case where a telephone was installed for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin in November, 1980 his Department undertook to have it connected before Christmas 1980 and that this has not yet been done; the cause of the delay; and how soon the telephone will be connected.

A telephone was installed for this applicant in the expectation that the cabling work necessary to enable service to be provided would be carried out shortly afterwards. Because of unexpected problems the cabling work could not be carried out as had been planned. It is now expected that service will be provided within the next month.

227.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in respect of Ashfield Estate, Mulhuddart, County Dublin, the number of telephones installed in October, November, and December 1980; the number not yet connected; and when they will be connected.

The numbers are none, 66 and 22 respectively.

About 48 of these telephones, mainly in phase II of the estate, have not yet been connected because of unexpected problems in providing the necessary cable. The work is being attended to and it is expected that service will be provided within the next month.

228.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones installed in 1980 which have not yet been connected.

About 500. About half of these were installed in advance of the cabling being attended to and will be given service within the next month. The remainder involve cases where it was found on test that the local cable was faulty. The faulty cables are being repaired progressively and every effort is being made to clear them quickly.
