Vol. 328 No. 2

Written Answers. - Children's Allowances.

349.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the amount on a daily basis of the general children's allowance in respect of the first child in a family; the daily amount in respect of the other children in a family; and the amount paid on a daily basis in sterling in respect of each child in Northern Ireland.

Minister for Social Welfare (Dr. Woods)

The daily rates of children's allowance at present in payment, rounded to the nearest penny, are 15p for the first qualified child of a family and 23p for each additional qualified child. Under the provisions of the 1981 budget these rates will increase by 33½ per cent to 20p and by 30 per cent to 30p respectively, with effect from July 1981.

In Northern Ireland a standard rate of allowance is payable in respect of all qualified children. The daily sterling rate at present in payment is 68p per child.

However, I should mention that in Northern Ireland the child tax allowance has been subsumed in the child benefit payment whereas a child tax allowance of £195 per child per annum is granted under our legislation.
