Estimates, 1981. - Vote 30: Office of the Minister for Education.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £43,470,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1981, for the salaries and expenses of the Office of the Minister for Education (including Institutions of Science and Art), for certain miscellaneous educational and cultural services and for payment of sundry grants-in-aid.

Question put and agreed to.

I should like some clarification. I understand the Taoiseach told the Leader of the Opposition that there would be some time for discussion of the Estimates. Now it seems we do not have any time. Am I to understand that the Estimates are being agreed on the basis that each of them may be debated fully by way of token Estimates before 31 December next?

Each Estimate may be debated fully by means of a token Estimate.

Is there agreement that we take all the Estimates together?

On 6 July 1977, on the suggestion of the then Minister for Finance, it was proposed, if the House were agreeable, that the 50 Estimates would be taken and that they would be moved all at once rather than moving them one by one. I propose that that procedure be adopted now.

I want confirmation from the Chair that token Estimates will be introduced——

I have said that the Estimates may be discussed by way of token Estimates. That is what was requested by the Deputy.

Is there any distinction now between Estimates that have not got Supplementary Estimates and Estimates that have?

It was agreed that every Estimate now passed would be discussed later.
