Vol. 329 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hit and Run Accidents Compensation.

135.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will review the existing agreement with the Motor Insurers' Bureau with a view to up-dating it to provide for compensation by the bureau to persons injured in hitand-run accidents.

I have no proposals for renegotiation of the existing agreement. Where a person has sustained serious and permanent disablement, or has died as a result of injury, and it is reasonably certain that the disablement or death was caused by the negligent use of the untraced vehicle, the bureau are prepared to give sympathetic consideration to making an ex gratia payment.
