Vol. 329 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dun Laoghaire Areas Water Pressure.

78.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the dangerous level of the water pressure in the Sallynoggin, Glenageary and Rochestown areas of Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin; and the action, if any, he intends to take in the matter.

The provision, operation and maintenance of public water supplies in the areas mentioned by the Deputy are primarily matters for Dun Laoghaire Corporation and Dublin County Council. However, I have had inquiries made of the relevant local authorities and am informed that the position is as follows: Dun Laoghaire Corporation report that while complaints are received from individuals in the borough, from time to time, they generally relate to specific faults which are quickly remedied. There does not appear to be any general problem in Dun Laoghaire Borough relating to significant lack of pressure or supply of water for domestic use.

Dublin County Council concede that due to the huge increase in population there are water supply problems in parts of those areas which are in the county particularly in high areas and at the ends of the present supply system. The council have formulated proposals — the Rathmichael water supply scheme — which will substantially improve the local water storage and distribution system.

It is understood that working drawings are in preparation for the most urgent of the improvements in the water distribution system. Contract documents for a new reservoir at Rathmichael with a storage capacity of 2.31 million gallons were received by my Department from Dublin County Council on 23 July 1981 and are under examination. I understand that the local authority are finalising negotiations for the purchase of the reservoir site and should be in a position to submit a certificate of completion of planning of the reservoir shortly.

Fire fighting in the Sallynoggin, Glenageary, and Rochestown Park areas, including the parts of those areas which are in County Dublin, is carried out by the Dún Laoghaire Fire Brigade. I am informed that the fire service have not had any problems due to water pressure in the area.
