Vol. 330 No. 7

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

510.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the long delay in installing telephones in the Hollyhill area of Cork city; and the number of persons who are awaiting telephones in the Churchfield, Knocknaheeny-Hollyhill area.

There are about 150 waiting applications in the area mentioned. Delay has arisen because of a shortage of spare cable pairs in the area. Work on a major cabling scheme to serve the area is expected to commence shortly and it is expected that the bulk of the waiting applications will be cleared over the next year or so.

511.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the importance of having an efficient telephone service for the business, industrial and tourist interests in County Kerry, he will agree to set up an adequate contracting and servicing section there.

It is assumed that what the Deputy has in mind is the setting up of an office to deal with telephone applications and customers' inquiries, etc., about service which, at present, are dealt with at the local post office. The question of opening such offices at additional locations, including one in County Kerry, is under examination and is the subject of discussion with the staff unions involved. It is not possible to say at this stage when such an office will be opened in County Kerry.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is intended to provide the north Clare area with an automatic telephone service.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 514 and 515 together.

The following are the forecast dates for the provision of automatic service at exchanges in the Scarriff and Ennistymon charge groups.

Exchange Scarriff Group

Forecast for automatic service

Feakle

All subscribers connected to these exchanges should get automatic service about the end of 1983. Some Feakle subscribers will be served by a new exchange at Caher and some Scarriff subscribers will be served by a new exchange at Ogonnelloe.

Mountshannon

Scarriff

Whitegate

Ennistymon Group

It is hoped to provide automatic service at Ennistymon itself in the fourth quarter of 1982. The other exchanges in the group—Ballyvaughan, Bell Harbour, Burrin, Carron, Craggagh, Kilfenora, Lahinch, Lisdoonvarna, Miltown-Malbay and Quilty—will be converted to automatic working during 1983. The manual exchanges at Bell Harbour and Burrin will be replaced by a new exchange at Behagh and the manual exchange at Quilty will be replaced by a new exchange at Mullagh.

Note:

The forecasts for the provision of automatic service are based on the assumption that due dates for completion of contract works for buildings, equipment etc. will be adhered to within reasonable limits.

516.

The complaint made by the subscriber is being investigated but it is not possible to say at this stage whether the subscriber has been overcharged. It is expected that the examination will be completed in about a fortnight.

517.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny.

It is unlikely that it will be possible to provide the service for at least a year.

It is expected that service will be provided about the end of this year.

Service will be provided as soon as possible but it is unlikely that it will be possible to do so until well into 1982.
