Vol. 330 No. 13

Written Answers. - National Schools.

588.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the inconvenience and financial embarrassment being caused to the management board of a national school (details supplied) in County Galway due to the fact that the Office of Public Works will not certify that the repairs carried out are of the standard required; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Department of Education sanctioned a grant towards the cost of certain improvement works at the school in question and the reverend chairman of the board of management entered into a contract for the execution of the work. The contract has not been fully carried out and part of the executed work is unsatisfactory. The Commissioners of Public Works have certified payment of grant in respect of as much of the work as is considered by their architect to be satisfactory. They cannot certify unsatisfactory work for grant.

The commissioners understand that the board of management have been pressing the contractor to complete the contract and any effective action required in this context must be taken by the reverend chairman as a party to the contract. The commissioners will however keep in touch with the reverend chairman with a view to solving the problems involved.
