Vol. 331 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

683.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the arrangements being made at present to install a public telephone kiosk at Hollyhill shopping centre, Hollyhill, Cork.

While it is planned to provide a telephone kiosk to serve the Hollyhill shopping centre, there are over 800 kiosks included in the current programme for provision of kiosks throughout the country, and it may therefore be some considerable time before the kiosk at Hollyhill shopping centre can be provided.

684.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants for telephone service in the Cork North Central constituency; and the time it will take to supply telephones.

Records are not, I regret, maintained in a form that would enable this information to be obtained readily and its compilation would involve a disproportionate amount of staff time. However, there are about 2,775 applications awaiting attention at the exchanges in the general area and it is expected that the majority of these will be met within the next year with the remainder being met progressively over the following year or so.

685.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in regard to a particular contract in Galway city (details supplied) the conditions which have to be fulfilled and the time limit within which these conditions have to be fulfilled before the contract is placed.

The conditions attached to the letter of intent to grant an exclusive licence in this case are as follows:—

1. (a) that within one month the company advise the Department of the specific location proposed for the aerial and head-end equipment; that signal survey measurements at the proposed site be conducted on a daily basis during programme hours, commencing within one month; that the Department be supplied with details of these measurements from time to time as requested and that the company allow officials of the Department to inspect the proposed site and equipment and to conduct separate signal strength measurements as required from time to time at that site; (b) that within three months the company submit to the Department for approval a complete system design of the proposed Galway system.

2. That within three months evidence is submitted to the Department that the necessary planning permission and way-leave licences have been obtained; that the company has satisfied the ESB and the telecommunications service of the Department that the proposed system will not come into conflict with the ESB or telecommunications networks and that the company has complied with the regulations of the Department of Transport regarding the erection of structures in the vicinity of airports.

686.
