Vol. 331 No. 4

Written Answers. - New Schools.

730.

asked the Minister for Education the progress being made to acquire a site for the proposed second level school at Grange, Rathfarnham, County Dublin; and when the school will open.

Discussions have taken place in regard to the purchase of a site for a new second level school to serve the Marley area and the matter is still under consideration. Following a meeting with the authorities of existing secondary schools it is intended to seek the views of the Dublin Advisory Council at an early date on the question of the future provision to be made for second level education in the general area and the extent of the additional provision which may be required.

It is not possible at this stage to indicate a date for the opening of a new school.

731.

asked the Minister for Education the present position in relation to the provision of a second level school on the eastern side of Galway city.

732.

asked the Minister for Education if he has approved the provision of a new secondary school to serve the Mervue-Renmore-Ballybane area of Galway city; if so, where this new school will be located; and who will be in charge of the school.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 731 and 732 together.

It is intended to provide a new second level school on the eastern side of Galway city when the growth in pupil numbers warrants it. The school will be located in the Ballybane area. My Department are in communication with Galway Corporation in regard to the identification of a suitable site. A decision has not yet been taken in relation to the form of management of the proposed new school.

733.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to sanction the building of a new primary school (details supplied) in County Galway.

734.

asked the Minister for Education the present position in relation to the proposed new national school at Coláiste Iognáid, Gaillimh.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 733 and 734 together.

Tenders for a new school building for Scoil Iognáid in Galway are under consideration by the Commissioners of Public Works. It is understood from the Commissioners that they expect to be in a position to report on the tenders to my Department at an early date. This report will be considered without delay in my Department and I would expect that the project might then be allowed to proceed to contract.

735.

asked the Minister for Education the position in relation to the new national school for Annaduff parish in County Leitrim; and when it is hoped to commence work.

The submission of satisfactory evidence of title to the site by the school authorities' legal advisers is awaited. When satisfactory title has been established, a grant towards the cost of the project will be sanctioned.

736.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received his inspector's report on the recent inspection carried out on the site for the proposed new national school for Culleens, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department's inspector has submitted a report on certain sites for the proposed new national school at Culleens, County Mayo, including a site which has been offered very recently and which had not been inspected by the Commissioners of Public Works at the time of his visit. The commissioners have been asked to report on the suitability of the recently offered site and it is expected that their report will be submitted at an early date.

As the Deputy knows, the essential difficulty in this case is of local origin. No avoidable delay will occur in making progress on this issue.
