Vol. 331 No. 10

Written Answers. - Mountmellick (Laois) Parking By-Laws.

642.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will refuse to approve the implementation of the parking by-laws for the town of Mountmellick, County Laois before first taking into consideration the views of local traders and the members of the town commission; and if he will give consideration to the provision of a by-pass there to facilitate heavy trucks and other traffic.

Traffic and parking by-laws for County Laois, which would enable controls to be applied in several towns, including the town of Mountmellick, were submitted by the Garda Commissioner for my consent on 23 September 1981. The by-laws have been examined in my Department and clarification has been sought from the commissioner on a number of aspects. I understand that the Garda Commissioner received the agreement of the town commissioners to the by-laws and I have not received any representations from the town commissioners or from local traders since the submission of the by-laws for my consent. It is open to the town commissioners or any person to make representations to me regarding the by-laws. The implementation of the by-laws if and when I consent to them would be a matter for the Garda. Regarding a by-pass for Mountmellick, this is a matter for Laois County Council in the first instance and I have received no proposals from them for the construction of such a facility.
