Vol. 332 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bread Subsidy.

356.

asked the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism (a) the current rate of bread subsidy per 800 gramme loaf or in any other popular unit measure and (b) the effect on the consumer price index as provided by the estimate of £45 million in 1982.

The present rate of subsidy payable on standard bread is 15½p per 800 gramme loaf and pro rata on other standard size loaves.

I am not clear what precisely the Deputy means by the effect on the consumer price index as provided by the estimate of £45 million in 1982. However, an allocation of £45 million, based on the current consumption of bread, would work out at a subsidy rate of approximately 17p per 800 gramme loaf, and reduce the consumer price index by 0.86 per cent.
