asked the Minister for Labour the number of redundancies in 1980 and the provisional estimate for 1981.

The total number of redundancies notified in 1980 and 1981 to my Department as qualified under the Redundancy Payments Acts were as follows: 1980, 14,664; 1981, 17,801.

219.

asked the Minister for Labour the total redundancy payments (provisional and unaudited estimates) for 1980 and 1981.

Statistics for particular years of total redundancy payments made to workers under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967 to 1979 can only be estimated by reference to amounts paid from the redundancy fund in the years in question. On this basis, estimated total payments were £7,902,000 in 1980; £11,380,000 in 1981.

Payments from the fund cover rebates to employers in respect of statutory lump sums and lump sums paid in full where employers fail to make the payments. The figures also include the cost of certain residual weekly redundancy payments.
