Vol. 334 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Applicants.

307.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that there is a great deal of concern that so many applicants who passed the examination for the Garda Síochána failed the subsequent interview; and if he will request the Civil Service Commissioners to arrange for a further interview of those who failed with a view to verifying the original result.

In accordance with the Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1981, it is the Civil Service Commissioners who are responsible for the conduct of competitive interviews of candidates for admission to the force, including both those who passed the qualifying educational examination and those who qualified by virtue of their leaving certificate examination results.

I am informed by the Civil Service Commission that it is the general practice of the commissioners to allow one interview only in the case of competitions conducted by them and that requests for a reinterview are not granted. It is, however, open to any candidate who so wishes to have his/her result at the competitive interview rechecked by the commission. It would also be open to any person who fulfils the requirements for entry to the force to apply again in the context of the next recruitment competition.
