Vol. 334 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kerry Industrial Employment.

591.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the present position in relation to the prospects of providing industrial employment in the Caherciveen area of County Kerry in view of the high unemployment rate there; if he will arrange for assistance from the EEC Social Fund for this particular district; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the IDA that it is at present examining the feasibility of constructing a 24,000 sq.ft. factory for craft or craft-related industries on its 3.8 acre site in the town.

In addition the former Tricots-de-Luxe factory is being vigorously promoted by the IDA for suitable industry.

With regard to the question of assistance from the EEC Social Fund, it is not clear what specific form of assistance the Deputy has in mind but I would point out that primary responsibility in regard to the fund rests with the Minister for Labour.

592.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the reason the IDA are not buying the site at Waterville Road, Sneem, County Kerry from a person (details supplied) in County Kerry in view of the fact that this site has planning permission for a hotel and was approved by Bord Fáilte as being most suitable for hotel purposes; whether he is aware of the need for an industry in Sneem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that they decided not to proceed with the purchase of the site, referred to by the Deputy because a comprehensive investigation by independent consultants has shown that its sub-soil conditions make the site unsuitable for industrial development.

The IDA are continuing their efforts to identify a suitable site for industrial development in Sneem.
