asked the Minister for Social Welfare the approximate number of persons at present contributing towards social welfare contributory pensions; and the number of (a) retirement, (b) old age, (c) long-term disability and (d) widows' pensions now in payment.

The number of persons who were insured for contributory pensions under the social insurance scheme in the 1980-81 contribution year, which is the latest date for which figures are available, was approximately 1.08 million.

The estimated average number of pensions in payment during 1982 is as follows: (a) Retirement Pensions, 33,000; (b) Old Age (Contributory) Pensions, 68,630; (c) Long-Term Disability (i.e. Invalidity) Pensions, 19,080; (d) Widows' (Contributory) Pensions, 72,660.
