Vol. 334 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Council Road Workers' Deductions.

837.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the deductions from the pay of county council road workers at the top of the rationalised weekly rate, approved for the 2nd Phase of the Public Services Pay Agreement, 1982, as at the end of April 1982, (£101.87), and the Social Welfare and Health Services Acts, in actual and percentage payterms per week as follows: (1) gross basic weekly pay (top of scale), payable in mid-April 1982; (2) deductions for social insurance, and percentage of pay; (3) deductions for health services, and percentage of pay; (4) deductions under youth employment levy, and percentage of pay; (5) deduction for superannuation (1977 Scheme) and percentage of pay.

It is understood that the maximum of the wage scale for county council road workers with effect from 1 March 1982 is £5,318 (£101.87 per week) and that the superannuation contributions under the 1977 scheme in this case would be £2.60 weekly which is equivalent to 2.55 per cent of gross earnings.

The reckonable earnings on which employee contributions for social insurance (5.5 per cent), health (1 per cent) and youth employment levy (1 per cent) are levied are earnings less superannuation contributions, subject in the case of social insurance and health, to an annual ceiling of £9,500. The amounts of contributions are therefore as follows: Social Insurance — £5.45 weekly equivalent to 5.4 per cent of gross pay; Health — £0.99 weekly equivalent to 0.97 per cent of gross pay; Youth Employment Levy — £0.99 weekly equivalent to 0.97 per cent of gross pay.
