Vol. 336 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Galway Roads.

852.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider returning the money collected by Galway County Council for motor taxation to the council so that they can maintain the roads and keep other essential services in operation.

By law, motor taxation receipts accrue to the Exchequer. The Deputy might note that the total of road grants allocated in 1981 significantly exceeded the total income from motor tax receipts. Grants to Galway County Council in that year far exceeded the amount collected by the council by way of motor tax. Estimates for 1982 indicate a similar position.
