Vol. 336 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cycle Lanes.

546.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the desire of a number of local authorities to make special provision for cyclists by way of cycle lanes; if he is further aware that there is at present no provision in law whereby such facilities can be provided; and whether he intends to give consent to the making of bye-laws for their provision under sections 88, 89 and 95 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, or such other sections of other legislation as might be appropriate in these circumstances.

I am advised that adequate legal authority exists under the Road Traffic General Bye-Laws, 1964, and the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974, for the provision of cycle tracks on public roads. Implementation of these powers is for the road authorities concerned.
