asked the Minister for Defence the number of FCA and An Slua Muirí personnel paid the full rate of gratuity in 1959, 1969 and 1981; and the data expressed as a percentage of the respective establishment and strength figures.

The information requested by the Deputy in respect of 1981 is as follows:

Number of FCA and Slua Muirí personnel paid full gratuity, 11,129; percentage of establishment paid full gratuity, 48.6 per cent; Percentage of strength paid full gratuity, 50.1 per cent.

Details regarding the gratuities paid to the FCA and Slua Muirí in 1959 and 1969 are not now available.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state for the years 1959, 1969 and 1981 in respect of FCA and Slua Muirí units in regard to the grant in aid; the number of units paid automatically; the number who required a special submission prior to its payment; and the amounts of such grant in aid.

In order to qualify for payment of annual grant, units of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil are expected to achieve specified minimum strengths. All units were paid the maximum grant permissible in the years 1959, 1969 and 1981. The numbers of units which fell below the designated minimum strength figure in those years and, consequently, were the subject of special consideration before payment of grant was authorised were as follows:—1959, 1; 1969, 14; 1981, 12.

In the case of An Slua Muirí, a grant of a specified amount in respect of each member on the effective strength of the unit concerned is payable.

The maximum amounts of the grants in the years mentioned were as follows:—
