Vol. 337 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cahir (Tipperary) Factory.

132.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when it is proposed to re-open a factory premises (details supplied) in Cahir, County Tipperary; and the number of jobs it is proposed to create.

The closure of this factory last February arose mainly because of a reduction in the supply of raw materials for processing due to a decrease in slaughterings at meat plants. This decrease stems from the decline in the cattle herd, which the Government are actively seeking to reverse. The recently announced calf premium and calved heifer schemes provide strong incentives to increase livestock production.

I am aware that some negotiations for the re-opening of the factory have been taking place. The actual re-opening is, however, a matter for the private interests involved.
