Vol. 337 No. 2

Written Answers. - Post Primary Schools.

450.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if sports halls are being provided for post primary schools in the current year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A new building or major extension to a post-primary school being planned in the current year will include the provision of physical education facilities.

451.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if the qualifications of a fully qualified metalwork-woodwork teacher which were obtained in St. Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, and recognised by the British Department of Education and Science for teaching purposes in post primary schools, are recognised for teaching purposes in Ireland; and, if not, the extra qualifications which are required.

Qualifications obtained outside the State in the areas of woodwork and metalwork are assessed on an individual basis by the registration council for secondary teachers in relation to the question of their acceptance for the purpose of the recognition of teachers in Ireland. It is not possible to state on the basis of the information as given whether the qualifications mentioned in the question from the Deputy would be acceptable for such purposes.

asked the Minister for Education the reason the conditions, which were accepted by both his Department and the officers of the Miltown Malbay Community Hall when the application was made in 1981 for the capital recreation grant of £25,000, are now being changed especially when the officials who visited the site recently did not seem to be au fait with the proposals of the local architect.

The former Minister of State allocated a grant of £25,000 towards the cost of constructing a community centre at Miltown Malbay, County Clare, subject to the terms and conditions of the community, youth, recreational and employment programme.

One of the advertised conditions of the programme was that the plans for the proposed development had to be approved by the Department. The plans submitted by the community hall committee did not include specific provision for changing and shower facilities. Officers of my Department visited the secretary of the committee to discuss this matter, inter alia, and found that work on the project had already started. Discussions on the plans have taken place between the architect and my Department's Technical adviser in this matter and my Department are awaiting the submission of revised plans incorporating the required changing and shower facilities.

Pending the receipt of such plans my Department are not in a position to confirm the grant allocation in this case.

asked the Minister for Education if he will confirm that a person (details supplied) is qualified for recognition as a full time teacher in catechetics in the light of his qualifications which include an honours BA in Philosophy, the Higher Diploma in Education (including methods lectures) and two years study for a DD.

The registration council for secondary teachers accepts a BD of a recognised university together with the higher diploma in education with special methods and teaching practice in religious education for the purpose of recognition as a teacher of religious education up to nine hours per week as part of his normal teaching duties in a secondary school.

It is suggested that the person in relation to whom details were supplied in the question should contact my Department so that his particular qualifications may be considered in the context of the requirements of the registration council.

asked the Minister for Education if he will agree to a remedial teacher being provided for Murrinstown national school, County Wexford.

My Department have not received an application to appoint a remedial teacher to Murrinstown national school. Should the school board of management wish to make an application it will be considered in connection with the allocation of such teachers to schools in the school year 1982-83, with due regard to all relevant circumstances.
