Vol. 337 No. 9

Written Answers. - Employment Figure.

433.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of people employed in agriculture each year since 1970.

434.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people employed in industry each year since 1970.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 433 and 434 together. The numbers (000) of persons at work in Industry and Agriculture at the 1971 Census of Population were: industry 323; agriculture 273.

The following table contains estimates of the numbers of persons at work in industry and agriculture at mid-April for the years 1975 to 1980 based on the results of the 1975, 1977 and 1979 Labour Force Surveys, using trend indicators in different sectors to interpolate 1976 and 1978 figures and to obtain 1980 estimates.

Note:

(1) The Labour Force Survey involves a number of differences in methodology and in definition which affect the measurement of the labour force and the survey results are not therefore strictly comparable to census-based figures.

(2) When detailed results become available from the 1981 Census of Population an attempt will be made to assess the effects of the differences in methodology and definition between the census and labour force surveys. At that stage a table will be prepared containing the main Labour Force aggregates for the 1971-1981 period.
