Vol. 337 No. 10

Written Answers. - FCA Summer Training Camp.

505.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Defence the reason seven young men of the 3rd field medics unit have been asked to leave the FCA summer training camp in Lahinch, County Clare; if the incident was due to lack of finance; and if he will provide the necessary extra finance to enable all those who have been accepted for the course to complete it.

It is necessary to maintain strict control on the numbers of FCA personnel who may be called for training and the length of training periods in individual cases during 1982, having regard to the provision in the Defence Vote, 1982 for training of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil. The extent to which the available resources will permit personnel, including recruits, to be afforded training this year is being kept under constant review, with the objective of facilitating as many members as possible.

Following a review of the situation in regard to the 3rd Field Medical Company, the seven members referred to by the Deputy are being retained to complete two weeks' annual training.

506.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he intends to offer the genuine FCA recruit an opportunity to go to summer camp this year without suffering from the penalties of previous duties such as security and orderly rotas so that the dissatisfaction of the young volunteers will be dissipated.

I am not aware of any penalties arising from previous duties such as security and orderly rotas to which the Deputy refers.
